Panta Rei Symposium 2026: exploring the hemodynamics of the brain

SEISMIC’s academic lead, Erasmus MC and its BrainEcho Lab, are organising the 2026 Panta Rei Symposium on Brain Hemodynamics on 29 October in Rotterdam.

How does blood flow through the brain, and how can we visualise and understand these dynamics with increasing precision?

The BrainEcho Lab at Erasmus MC will bring together neuroscientists, clinicians, engineers and physicists for the second edition of the Panta Rei Symposium, dedicated to the hemodynamics of the brain.

The 2026 programme is now complete, featuring an international line-up of experts and a range of advanced brain imaging techniques, including functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi), ultrasound localisation microscopy (ULM), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and advanced MRI.

Why this matters for SEISMIC

Understanding brain hemodynamics is highly relevant to the work of SEISMIC, which brings together advanced imaging technologies, minimally invasive surgical approaches and clinical expertise to enable safer and more precise interventions in the brain.

Blood flow and vascular architecture play a critical role in many neurological conditions addressed within SEISMIC, including haemorrhagic stroke, chronic subdural haematoma and brain tumours. The ability to visualise the brain and its vasculature with greater spatial, temporal and functional detail can ultimately contribute to better diagnosis, treatment planning and image-guided intervention.

The BrainEcho Lab at Erasmus MC is a multidisciplinary environment where engineers, neuroscientists, neurosurgeons and physicists work together to develop and translate ultrasound-based approaches for studying the brain. Its expertise in advanced ultrasound imaging provides an excellent example of the type of interdisciplinary innovation that SEISMIC seeks to connect and advance.

A programme spanning multiple imaging technologies

The 2026 programme brings together six speakers covering complementary perspectives on brain imaging and hemodynamics:

  • Dr. Charlie Demené — Functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi) of the neonatal brain
  • Dr. Clare Elwell — Brain imaging for global health
  • Dr. Jeroen Siero — Cerebrovascular imaging using advanced MRI
  • Dr. Dimo Ivanov — Emerging MRI methods for imaging and analysing the brain's angioarchitecture
  • Dr. Marcel Aries — Brain hemodynamics and the intensive care
  • Dr. Olivier Couture — Ultrasound Localisation Microscopy (ULM) of the brain

Together, these talks highlight how different imaging approaches can provide complementary insights into cerebral blood flow, vascular architecture and brain function — from neonatal care and intensive care to advanced neuroimaging and ultrasound microscopy.

Free access for PhD students

The symposium was first organised in 2023, inspired by the PhD thesis of Erasmus MC neuroscientist and neurosurgery resident Dr. Sadaf Soloukey, one of the symposium's founders. The 2026 edition continues its multidisciplinary mission: creating a space where technological developments meet clinically relevant questions in brain research.
