About

Radboudumc is a university medical center for patient care, research, and education. The Radboudumc is located in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Researchers of the SEISMIC project are working at the department of Neurosurgery in the neurovascular research group, which is led by Prof. Jeroen Boogaarts. The neurovascular research group conducts research on the treatment, complications and outcome of several neurovascular diseases, such as ruptured and unruptured brain aneurysms, brain arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, and chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Within the SEISMIC consortium, the group focuses on minimally invasive cSDH treatment. The group currently consists of senior researchers, PhD students and a team of neurosurgeons.

Our role in the SEISMIC project

  • Lead the development of a nationwide prospective multicenter database investigating neurosurgical strategies and interventions for guiding hematoma treatment in chronic subdural hematoma
  • Development and definition of quantitative and qualitative outcome measures for chronic subdural hematoma patients.
  • Enhance surgical workflow and efficiency through simulation-based training – the development of a surgical simulator module
  • Development of an international multicentre trial to investigate the safety and effectiveness of chronic subdural hematoma treatment – comparison of standard burr hole drainage vs burr hole drainage combined with MMA embolization
  • Assess the clinical and economic benefits of integrating MMA embolization with surgical evacuation
